PISA

PISA

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a triennial international survey which aims to evaluate education systems worldwide by testing the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students who are nearing the end of their compulsory education. PISA assesses how well they can apply what they learn in school to real-life situations. Over 90 countries have participated in the assessment so far which began in 2000. Every three years students are tested in the key subjects: reading, mathematics and science.

The aim of Pisa is to provide comparable data to help countries improve their education policies and outcomes by measuring problem-solving abilities and cognition of students.

India had last participated in Pisa in 2009, when it had ranked 73rd among 74 countries, above only Kyrgyzstan.

Creative and Critical Thinking (CCT) exercise is a joyful and engaging activity aimed at enhancing the creative and critical thinking ability of students which help stimulate their minds and prepare them to proactively tackle the challenges of the 21st century. The CBSE sends competency-based questions mapped to the curriculum and based on conceptual understanding of real-life situations for students to attempt. The questions include a mix of Mathematics, Science and Reading. On an average 10 questions are created for each of the 3 areas (Reading, Mathematics and Science). Students have an option of attempting the paper either in Hindi or English Medium.

CCT Test are Eligible for all the students studying in class 7 to 11 in UT Chandigarh and Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan / Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti across India .

ABOUT FLN

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 came into effect on 29th July, 2020 with the principles to develop good human beings capable of rational thought and action, possessing compassion and empathy, courage and resilience, scientific temper and creative imagination with sound ethical moorings and values.

The fundamental principles that will guide both the education system at large, as well as the individual institutions mainly include, recognizing, identifying, and fostering the unique capabilities of each student, according the highest priority to achieving Foundational Literacy and Numeracy by all students by grade-3, flexibility, creativity and critical thinking etc.

Further the Ministry of Education has launched the National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy i.e. NIPUN Bharat Mission. This mission seeks to adopt a multi-pronged strategy which includes a clear goal setting, focused pedagogical approach and curriculum, continuous capacity building of teachers, preparation of quality teaching-learning materials to support the desired classroom practices, making the assessments to support and ensure learning, entailing stakeholders’ engagement and a robust IT system to analyses and report the progress. To put all of these collectively in a system requires new and reformed pedagogical approach for class room engagement.

Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, a national level pace setting educational institution in the field of school education has taken up various initiatives to realize the aims and objectives enshrined in National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. As envisioned in NEP 2020, KVS pledges to ensuring inclusive, equitable and qualitative education to its students irrespective of their social or economic backgrounds by providing them lifelong learning opportunities. Towards the empowerment of teachers by way of providing them adequate training and support materials in order to achieve Foundational Literacy and Numeracy in a time bound manner, a number of programmes have been undertaken.

Foundational Literacy and Numeracy: An urgent and necessary prerequisite to learning outlines the goals as; the ability to read and write, and perform basic operations with numbers for all future schooling and lifelong learning. Attaining Foundational Literacy and Numeracy for all children will thus become an urgent national mission. KVS, upto a great extent had adopted child centered, pedagogical practices such as activity based, play way, joyful learning, role play etc which suited to the achievement of learning outcomes. Various programmes like Common Minimum Programme, Strengthening of Primary Education, Back to Basics etc were introduced in all Kendriya Vidyalayas from time to time to ensure qualitative growth in the curricular transactions.

But still it was felt that our students also needed another boost to improve upon their foundational literacy and numeracy in the light of NEP 2020. To realize this goal, the experienced HMs/PRTs of KVs across the country have put their experiences and ideas together and have come out with concept wise modules to help the Primary Teachers of Kendriya Vidyalayas to bring about pedagogical changes in their classroom transactions mainly using toys, puppets, storytelling, art, music, indigenous games, experiential learning and other activities.
